How to read a barcode with your phone
- On the Camera tab, tap Turn on the camera and point at the barcode. Scanning starts automatically, and the image freezes when the reader finds the code.
- To read another code after a result, tap Scan again. To read without a camera, switch to the Photo tab.
- On the Photo tab, upload a photo of the code, sharp and up close. The reading happens in your browser, and the image never leaves your device.
- The result shows the format read, EAN-13 or Code 128, and the code's number, ready to copy.
The reader recognizes only EAN-13 and Code 128, the two formats the Kyte barcode generator creates. For example, 0123456789012 is a 13-digit EAN-13, and ABC-001 can be a Code 128, which accepts letters and numbers.
How it works
The reader runs in your browser, with no signup and no app to install. The camera only turns on when you tap Turn on the camera. Scanning is continuous, and the image freezes on the first code found, with a button to scan again.
- On the Photo tab, you upload an image of a code and the reader decodes it on the spot, never sending the photo anywhere.
- The result shows the format, EAN-13 or Code 128, and the number read. No image is kept after the reading.
Accepted formats and limits
- The reader accepts EAN-13, the 13-digit code found on retail products, and Code 128, used for internal codes and labels. Other formats, like QR codes, are not read.
- If camera permission is denied, allow access in your browser settings and try again.
- With no camera available or on unsupported browsers, use the Photo tab, because reading from an image works the same way.
- If the reader can't decode, try again with the code sharper, closer and in good light, and hold the image still for a moment.
Who it is for
- It works for anyone who received a product that is not yet in your records and wants to know the barcode number on the label.
- It works for anyone printing labels with the barcode generator who wants to confirm the code scans.
- It works for anyone selling with Kyte, because scanning with the camera records the sale and updates the stock of the registered product.
